About the China 1988 12 oz Silver Dragon 100 Yuan Proof Coin
Between 1988 and 1999, The People's Republic of China issued a series of coins featuring creatures important to both the psyche and the astrological calendar in Chinese culture. Each coin features one of the animals of the Chinese zodiac on one side, and images important in Chinese architecture or culture on the reverse. Above is one of the twelve ounce, 99.9% pure silver coins of the series. It bears the legal tender face value of 100 yuan.
This particular coin was authorized for release in 1988 and features the animal representing that year, the dragon. On the reverse face is an image of two dragons facing one another. The dragons bear the traditional features of a Chinese dragon, and are coiled as if to strike. They appear above the image of a raging sea.As the only mythical animal of the Chinese zodiac, the dragon is considered to be very special and fortuitous. The dragon is also known to be the strongest and most powerful animal of the zodiac, and is a symbol of male virility or power. Those born in the Year of the Dragon are said to be very lucky, happy and prosperous. The dragon, in Chinese culture, is associated with the traits of wit, forthrightness, patiences and inspiration. In medieval Europe, the dragon was seen as a type of demon; conversely, in Chinese culture, the dragon is a force for good.
The twelve ounce silver and gold coins of this series all feature images of Chinese architectural accomplishments on the obverse face of the coin. On this coin, one can see a section of the Great Wall of China. Between the dragons and the sea is the denomination of the coin, 100 yuan. Above the section of the wall, one can see the characters that signify, \\"The People's Republic of China.\\" This section of the wall shows two watchtowers. The Great Wall was started in 220 BC during the reign of Qin Shihuang, the great unifier of China, and its first emperor. In 1988, 3,000 of these coins were authorized for production.
