What is The Altlayer (ALT)?
AltLayer, an open and decentralized rollup service provider, introduces restaked rollups for enhanced security and decentralization. Its Rollups-as-a-Service (RaaS) platform enables easy rollup deployment across chains and offers ephemeral rollups for resource optimization. With a decentralized architecture, AltLayer prioritizes decentralization and interoperability.
Who Created The Altlayer (ALT) ?
AltLayer was founded by Dr. Jia Yaoqi. As the founder of Alt Research and AltLayer Network, he introduced an elastic Web3 scaling protocol. Previously, he directed Parity Asia and co-founded Zilliqa as CTO, pioneering full-fledged sharding in blockchain. Recognized in Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia 2019, his research spans blockchain, distributed system, web, and network security, proposing innovative solutions for web infrastructure security.
How Does Altlayer (ALT) Work?
The core innovation of AltLayer is the concept of "Restaked Rollups".
Restaked Rollups combine the strengths of:
- Rollup stacks (like OP Stack, Arbitrum Orbit, Polygon CDK, ZK Stack) to launch specialized, application-specific rollups.
- EigenLayer's restaking mechanism to provide enhanced security, decentralization, interoperability, and fast finality to these rollups. The restaking mechanism borrows economic security from the Ethereum Layer 1 to bootstrap the AltLayer network.
AltLayer's core products that power the Restaked Rollups include:
VITAL - An Actively Validated Service (AVS) where operators validate blocks and the corresponding states committed by the rollup sequencing mechanism. They can raise fraud proofs if necessary.
MACH - A protocol that provides faster finality for the rollup process by allowing operators to restake Ethereum-based assets to back their claims.
SQUAD - Offers decentralized sequencing with economic backing. This eliminates issues like short-term liveness concerns, malicious MEV, and rent extraction associated with rollups operated by a single sequencer.
Ephemeral Rollups - AltLayer also offers "ephemeral rollups" - highly resource-optimized rollups that can be quickly spun up, used as needed, and then disposed of. This provides the benefits of application-specific rollups with the flexibility of general-purpose Layer 1s..
Tokenomics
Token Utility
The ALT token is the native utility token of the AltLayer ecosystem, used for:
- Staking and providing economic bond for the network
- Governance of the protocol's development and operations
- Paying transaction fees and other service fees within the AltLayer ecosystem
